Band practice again. The band is taking over. We practice three times a day, after every meal. I just gobble up my food and hare it down to the band room to practice while the other lads are playing on the playground. Brother Fallon never comes to the band room, but to me, he’s every bit as present as the seventy or so lads who attack their instruments with as much gusto as they attack the grub in the ref. The Do-Re-Mi rebel songs he taught me are sounding better and better on my trombone, especially my favorite, “Twenty Men From Dublin Town.”

I just can’t seem to learn how to read music properly though, and I’m starting to worry. Nobody bothers me about it except Fatser McBride, who sneers at my efforts every time. It’s hard to focus when he’s in my face.

But I’ll have to learn to read music sooner or later. George Crean hasn’t really got the time to give me any help in Band Two and Ernie Fanning has more or less given up trying to teach me. The main band travels outside the school to play at other Christian Brother schools, football matches, and concerts. I really want to be good enough to go with them one day. Although . . . I’ll probably be home with Ma before that, right? But there’s no harm in trying to get better, is there? With the rest of the band blaring away at the new songs they have to learn, I’ll just keep on doing the Do-Re-Mi rebel songs on my own. Nobody pays me any attention in the deafening din. Day after day, I whack away at that rusty old trombone.
